ESL - English as a Second Language

 

ESL classes teach grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, and life skills. All classes also include instruction in English Language Civics.

 

Due to COVID-19 all course registration for Fall 2020 will be taking place through our online registration system. Returning students will need to use the email address they used during their initial enrollment to sign in. Please use the "Forgot Password?" link to set a password. New students will create an account as part of the enrollment process.

 

Golden Oak Adult School offers 5 levels of ESL. Please use the information below to determine the approximate best level for you. All students will participate in an assessment during the first week of classes to confirm they are in the correct level. Please understand that your level and class placement may change as a result of assessment.

 

ESL Course Levels

 

ESL Foundations

 

Foundations is for students who are considered pre-literate and require instruction in the English alphabet, writing letters, and basic phonics. Students in this level typically have little formal schooling and may not read or write in their native language.

 

ESL Low Beginning

 

Low Beginning is appropriate for students who know the fundamentals of the English alphabet although they may not be familiar with English pronunciation. Students in this level typically have basic understanding of the elements of text and can read left to right and top to bottom on a page. Students may understand some basic English but be unable to speak or write independently.

 

ESL High Beginning

 

High Beginning is appropriate for students who have basic reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students in this level typically can read basic sight words and participate in short conversations in English. Students can write short sentences and spell words phonetically.

 

ESL Intermediate for the Workplace

 

Intermediate for the Workplace is appropriate for students who have learned basic conversational and social English and are ready to begin developing more professional and academic English skills. Students in this level can typically write short paragraphs and participate in conversations on a variety of everyday topics. In this course, there is a large focus on application of English skills and planning for career advancement and transition to college or other educational opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to co-enroll in a specially designed introductory course through College of the Canyons' School of Personal and Professional Development. 

 

ESL Advanced Integrated English

 

Advanced Integrated English is appropriate for students who have some professional and academic English skills but require additional support as they transition to further career training or academic work. Students in this level can typically speak fluent conversational English and write at least a paragraph. Students are expected to co-enroll in a high school diploma course, career training course, or program through College of the Canyons' School of Personal and Professional Development. 

 

ESL Computers for the Workplace

 

Computers for the Workplace teaches students basic computer skills as well as how to communicate about technology and computers in a workplace environment. Skills include word processing, internet search skills, and internet safety. Students in this course are expected to have English skills at the Low Beginning level or above.

 

Fall 2020 Schedule

 

*Due to COVID-19 all programs will be conducted entirely online. To participate, you will need a personal computer, laptop, or tablet and internet access. Students are expected to attend class via video conferencing on one day each week as well as complete additional online work each week.

 

Students will register for ONE of the sessions listed below. All ESL classes begin the week of August 24 and run until November 22

**All students will be expected to purchase a textbook and/or workbook for their class. Teachers will provide details when classes begin.
